Frequently Asked Questions

How is the neurofeedback in the office superior to a device I can buy on the internet for home use?

Consider this: few to none of the devices currently sold for home use have undergone the rigors of peer reviewed, randomized controlled clinical studies on the effectiveness of the instrument. Home NF compared to clinical NF offered in my office is analogous to traveling cross country on a dirt road utilizing a bicycle, versus traveling cross country on a paved road in a sports car. The bicycle may get you there eventually but the journey is long and arduous and most would give up prior to achieving any lasting gains toward the goal.

Does insurance cover the cost of EMDR or Neurofeedback?

Some insurance companies will reimburse for all or a portion of NF or EMDR services based on diagnosis and the individual insurance plan. However, clients pay me directly for each session. I can provide a monthly receipt for services for you to submit to your own insurance company for reimbursement.

For EMDR and First Responders, I have a limited number of contracts with Employee Assistance Plans (EAPs). Check to see if I am listed as a provider, which can help typically pay for 8-10 sessions per year.

If my practice is full, what questions might you ask a prospective EMDR therapist or neurofeedback practitioner?

  1. How recently was the therapist trained?

  2. How many session does it take to for the therapist to start EMDR with clients, on average?

  3. Does the therapist have regular clinical consultation with other therapists or NF practitioners?

  4. When was the last time the therapist had continuing education in EMDR or Neurofeedback?

  5. How often does the therapist use EMDR on a weekly basis?

  6. For Neurofeedback: is the clinician trained in the ILF Othmer Method or another type of neurofeedback?
